Claire Haws is an associate in Axinn’s Litigation group. Her practice focuses on complex commercial litigation.

Claire earned her JD from the University of Michigan Law School, where she was a senior notes editor at the Michigan Business and Entrepreneurial Law Review and was a member of the Women Law Students Association.

Prior to joining Axinn, Claire was a law clerk at the appeals court division of the City of Chicago Department of Law. She assisted with an appellate briefing and oral argument in cases involving the city’s many departments.

Claire graduated from Northwestern University, where she double majored in Political Science and Legal Studies. During her undergraduate studies, Claire was a research assistant at the Institute of International Relations in Prague.

She was a summer associate with Axinn in 2021.

Seven Axinn Attorneys Named to 2023 Empire State Counsel Program

Axinn Secures Asylum on Behalf of Pro Bono Client

Axinn has secured asylum on behalf of an Afghan man who worked in the democratic Afghan government’s National Directorate of Security (NDS). During his time with the NDS, he provided critical assistance to the U.S. Military. Due to his employment in the NDS and involvement with U.S. military operations, he was a Taliban target and thus in constant danger. When the Taliban took Kabul in August 2021, the man was forced to flee Afghanistan for his life. A team of Axinn attorneys prepared a legal brief, supporting factual documentation, and accompanied the man to an interview with asylum officers in October 2023. He is excited to see what life in the United States with his new asylee status has in store for him. The team included Claire Haws, Blake Pescatore, Aigerim Saudabayeva, Conner Dwinell, and Denise Plunkett.

The Axinn team, led by partners Craig Reiser and Denise Plunkett, with assistance from Eva Yung, Caroline Boisvert, and Claire Haws, received a shout out from The American Lawyer in its “Litigator of the Week” column for their successful defense of the claims brought by Hans Niemann against Magnus Carlsen in the high-profile chess cheating lawsuit against Carlsen and four other defendants. The Axinn team was supported by Missouri counsel at Stinson LLP and worked alongside co-counsel at Latham & Watkins LLP, who were also recognized for their representation of Chess.com, Danny Rensch, and Play Magnus; as well as Michael J. Axinn Achieves Complete Antitrust Victory for Chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen in $100 Million Lawsuit Over Cheating Allegations

On June 27, 2023, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri dismissed Hans Niemann’s $100 million lawsuit against Magnus Carlsen and four other co-defendants. Niemann’s lawsuit arises out of alleged statements and conduct following the 2022 Sinquefield Cup chess tournament. Carlsen and the other defendants moved to dismiss the case in its entirety on multiple grounds, including on the grounds that Niemann’s antitrust claims are not legally cognizable and Connecticut’s anti-Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (“anti-SLAPP”) statute bars all of Niemann’s state-law claims. Judge Audrey G. Fleissig dismissed all of Niemann’s antitrust claims, holding that, as an individual chess player, Niemann is not a “competitor” to recreational and professional chess platforms, and his alleged “individualized professional and reputational injuries are [not of] the type that the antitrust laws were intended to prevent.” In addition, the Court declined to exercise supplemental jurisdiction and dismissed Niemann’s state-law claims as well. Partners Craig Reiser and Denise Plunkett led the team representing Magnus Carlsen, alongside associates Eva Yung, Caroline Boisvert, and Claire Haws.

Eva Yung

Eva Yung is an associate in Axinn’s Litigation group. Her experience includes matters involving complex contractual disputes, antitrust issues, unfair and deceptive practices, and defamation. She specializes in breaking down complicated legal issues and fact patterns into manageable and successful strategies in a variety of contexts, such as multidistrict litigation and sprawling class actions. She has also taken leading roles in internal investigations and advised international clients on sanctions, FCPA and anti-terrorism law issues, as well as whistleblower guidelines and risk assessments. Outside of commercial litigation, she has also taken on immigration matters at the agency and appellate levels.
